Wayne State swept Frostburg State before falling to Northwood in the nightcap.
DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (1-1 overall) took care of Frostburg State (0-1 overall) in straight sets to open the 2024 Warrior Invitational before falling to Northwood (2-0 overall) in five sets for the nightcap. WSU will play the sixth and final match of the event on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Ohio Dominican.
"There were a lot of positives to build off of from this opening day of the season," said head coach Tim Koth. "We showed improvement in almost every phase of the game, but there's still some room for growth. Tomorrow is another day."
Match One - Wayne State 3, Frostburg State 0
HOW IT HAPPENED (-12, -19, -18)
- Wayne State dominated this match offensively hitting .301 to Frostburg State's .078.
- The Warriors racked up 32 kills to just 10 errors on 73 total attacks.
- The Bobcats on the other hand registered 30 kills with 23 errors on 90 swings.
- WSU was also dominant in the service ace category with seven to FSU's zero as well as blocks to the tune of 7-3.
- Thirteen of Wayne State's 75 total scores came on Frostburg State service errors.
- Five different Bobcats finished with two or more mishaps from behind the service line.
- Offensively, the Warriors' best set was the first as they hit a blistering .423 (13, 2, 26).
- In that first period, Frostburg State scored more than one point in a row just twice.
- The Bobcats were ahead 13-10 in the second before the Warriors outscored them 15-6 the rest of the way.
- The home team was ahead by as many as 10, 21-11, in the third and final stanza.

- Molly Miller recorded her eighth double-double as a Warrior thanks to 22 kills and 11 digs.
- Kayla Dulgar (49 assists) came within five of her career high that she set twice as a freshman.
- Kayla Giroux topped her previous personal best in kills of 17 with 18 of them on Friday night.
- Leigha Baldwin sent home a career high 13 kills, the same amount she had all of last season.
- Wayne State's offense was more efficient as the match progressed with hitting percentages, in order, of .200, .240, .256, .286 and .286.
- With that being said, Northwood out-hit the home team .267 to .248.
- Both teams had eight service aces, but the Warriors had the advantage in blocks, 10-3.
- The Timberwolves saved their best offense for last hitting .533 in the fifth set with 10 kills and only two errors on 15 swings.
